I had feared that stuff like that would be happening. I was also a bit disappointed that "Calling" doesn't even feature Rick at all.

Well A Momentary Lapse of Reason barely features him and The Final Cut doesn't at all, so it's not a new thing.

Yeah, same here. David has always been great at writing music that speaks without using words.

I was about to start another thread for this, but then I remembered... didn't I already make a thread like this? Anyway, I haven't looked at any of my previous lists, so it's more honest, I guess.

PIPER: Flaming, although Lucifer Sam is close.
SAUCERFUL: Remember A Day, although just about everything is close.
MORE: Cymbaline.
UMMAGUMMA: Live, Saucerful Of Secrets. Studio, Narrow Way.
ATOM HEART MOTHER: Do I really have to pick? Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast, but any one of them will do.
MEDDLE: Echoes, but One Of These Days comes close. As does everything else.
OBSCURED: Stay.
DARK SIDE: Us And Them, though Time is close.
WISH: Shine On, part 1. Or 1-5, however you want to call it.
ANIMALS: Dogs.
THE WALL: The first In The Flesh. One of My Turns is good too.
FINAL CUT: Final Cut. Several songs could fit here as well though.
AMLOR: On The Turning Away. Terminal Frost, Learning to Fly, Signs of Life could fit as well.
DIVISION BELL: High Hopes. Coming Back to Life and Lost for Words are great too.
ENDLESS RIVER: Anisina for single track, side 3 for continuous pieces.

Since Artisan is here, may as well update mine:

Piper at the Gates of Dawn: 'Interstellar Overdrive'
A Saucerful of Secrets: they all suck, but 'Remember A Day' if a gun was pointed at my head
More: 'Crying Song'
Ummagumma: 'A Saucerful Of Secrets'
Atom Heart Mother: they all suck, but 'Summer '68' if a gun, like Saucerful
Meddle: 'Echoes'
Obscured By Clouds: 'Childhood's End'
Dark Side Of The Moon: 'Us And Them'
Wish You Were Here: 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond'
Animals: 'Dogs'
The Wall: 'Empty Spaces/Young Lust' (The transition is just so awesome)
The Final Cut: 'The Final Cut'
A Momentary Lapse Of Reason: 'Yet Another Movie'
The Division Bell: 'Marooned/A Great Day For Freedom' (IMO one doesn't work without the other, for some reason)
The Endless River: 'Night Light/Allons-y 1/Autumn '68/Allons-y 2'

Is there a relatively affordable way to get the Dark Side immersion box? I've always wanted one but I haven't found one for relatively cheap. Are they even making them anymore, or were they limited edition?

Also Straw it seems we have vastly differing opinions on Saucerful and AHM :P

Amazon UK are still stocking them for just under £88, which isn't bad considering the RRP is £99. You may be able to find a used one in good condition on eBay.

I don't see how people could like either.

Atom Heart Mother:
Suite - boring, long, weird, unnecessary.
If - boring
Summer '68 - okay, but production is poor to the point where its hard to listen to
Fat Old Sun - boring, but not torturous
Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast - is this even music?

A Saucerful of Secrets:
All songs sound like their trying to be Syd's when their not. Remember a Day is the only non boring one, and its still pretty annoying.

Atome Heart Mother isn't "boring", it's "pastoral". "Atom Heart Mother" itself sounds like a soundtrack, which it was meant to. I believe the band described it as "a soundtrack to a film that was never made". "If" is kind of dull but points at Roger's lyrical direction. "Fat Old Sun" is the best of the song efforts by far, and it's a rare David lyric. "Summer '68" is lovely and poppy. "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" is utter shite, you're right there.

Atom Heart Mother is a blend of classical and rock. Some parts are a bit iffy, but overall it flows together well. Just as long as you don't take any parts out of context.

If is a relaxing dreamy piece that musically takes the atmosphere of Crying Song, but lyrically doesn't suck.

Summer 68 is a pretty heartfelt piano ballad. The production is a bit off, with dodgy edits and all, but overall it's just a gorgeous Rick Wright piece. And the sound could be worse, see Obscured by Clouds.

Fat Old Sun - nice More-type falsetto acoustic ballad. Love that guitar solo.

APB - Disregard the whole "guy eating breakfast" thing. This song is Rock Wright playing the piano, David Gilmour playing the acoustic guitar, and then the whole band playing together. They're not really jams, just great musicians playing music. The concept is stupid, but it's not thirteen minutes of a guy cooking breakfast. There is some genuinely good music in there.

Saucerful, I don't feel that Syd connection. They had never written anything before, really, and they were a part of the space rock scene. So they wrote about space. Syd wrote about animals being weird and fantastical adventures of scarecrows and gnomes and the like, not space oddysies. And Corporal Clegg sounds like Piper? I don't see that connection at all.

The horns in the suite constantly miss notes and that is really annoying. Come to think of it, that's actually the main gripe I have with this piece. Otherwise, its long, boring, and never feels like its going anywhere worthwhile.

If is boring like it or not, and I reeaally hate the way Roger pronounces the 'r's, like slurring them kind of

Fat Old Sun is less boring, but the falsetto is kind of annoying. The whole piece kind of makes me cringe. Its pretty folky though, if this is a good thing...

Summer '68 is worse produced than Obscured by Clouds in my opinion. The whole thing was forced together like trying to make unrelated jigsaw pieces join together.

Alan's psychedelic breakfast... the worst part is where Alan attacks his food like he is brutally mutilating what is about to be a murder victim.

Artisan wrote:Saucerful, I don't feel that Syd connection.

Exactly. I feel like they were trying too hard to be something they weren't.

Why is the falsetto annoying? David has sung falsetto on more songs than I can be bothered to count. Anyway, his falsetto on "Fat Old Sun" means he can actually sing it now and not have to change it to accommodate the change in his voice with age, so it kinda works better now.

By "I don't get the Sydcpnnection" I mean it doesn't sound like Syd at all, nor are they trying to. They're just having fun, like every album pre-1973.

I think their natural sound was progressive kind of rock, seen around Atom Heart Mother - Dark Side of the Moon kind of era. A Saucerful of Secrets is obviously pretty psychedelic, and I think its just an album that helped them find their feet for what was to come. More doesn't really count because its a soundtrack, and I think the studio Ummagumma has a similar purpose as Saucerful.

I'd say the best example of this is probably Let There Be More Light.
