Describe your music in five words or less!

Post by Alec Taylor » Mon Oct 26, 2015 5:14 pm

Okay, I had this fun idea pop into my head during a conversation I was having with Madi. To all of us here who make music ourselves, whether we record it and endlessly spam the forums with links and sneaky signature promotions (I would never do that) or just play in our free time for shits and giggles, let's play a game. Describe the music you play/write/record in five words or less! I know this won't be a long-lasting discussion, but I thought it could be fun.

I'll go first: "Wright-led Floyd, but boring"
"A man lies and dreams of green fields and rivers, but awakes to a morning with no reason for waking."

I am noticing that, when we are free to express negative opinions in a humorous manner, we create the most hilarious posts by far.

Can't commit, finish, or play.

I've been trying since I was 7 and now every time I play I feel like I got worse. I can only play one song, Nightswimming by REM, and even then not without a lot of mistakes (and it's literally just two parts alternating!) I've taken lessons and all I've done is lost the will to play the thing. Meanwhile, I sit down at a drum kit having never touched one before and can play pretty well, or at least decently, in less than a week. I'm not bad at guitar or bass either. But I've been playing the piano for more than a decade and I still suck. Hell, I'm better at singing, and I'm as monotone as Bob Dole. And I only have one song I wrote that's complete, with an ending and lyrics and everything, and yet I still don't have a good complete recording of that. Plus I'm cursed when it comes to recording. I can't even play simple shit and it makes me hate music.

End rant.

Attempting to fix brickwalled music

(Official Remaster)

Can't fix compression, but tried

(for reference: obviously the same file, but where the wall of the waveform slows down and only has the spikes where the drums should be are meant to be quiet parts when most of the instruments fade to the background in the original... compression was added on the remaster and pulled the quiet parts up to the same level. there is no way to reinstate the punch of the drums, for example, but at least the quiet delicate part isn't as loud as the crescendo)

I wish I knew more about production techniques, I feel like my music has a very 'sterile' sound to it sometimes because of the MIDI I use to record with.

Yeah, midi will take the life out of music. I've been experimenting with recording piano both through DI and microphone at the same time to get a more natural sound and blend it in with the stereo. Only problem is that I suck at piano and it sounds like shit either way

My actual keyboard is getting old, so it's dropped a bit in pitch, has keys break off all of the time, and just has poor sound quality. So recording it with a mic just won't work until I can save up the money for a new one that's work a damn.
