Game: The Best of Gilmour

Postby Dyolf » Thu Jan 18, 2018 3:56 pm

You have been tasked with compiling a single CD volume of "the best of David Gilmour". The rules:

1. The songs must either be Gilmour solo tracks or Pink Floyd tracks credited solely to Gilmour.
2. The songs must not exceed a total of 90 minutes (one CD).
3. Studio tracks only, no live recordings.
4. When you post your list, you must also give the total running time (the easiest way to find the total running time is to make a playlist in iTunes)

I'll have to give this some thought when I'm at work next.

Didn't realize how much ol' David relies on padding his songs with guitar solos for length until I had to make these tracks fit within 90 minutes. Good lord man.

1. Fat Old Sun
2. Rattle That Lock
3. There's No Way Out of Here
4. So Far Away
5. Murder
6. In Any Tongue
7. Allons-y (1)
8. Terminal Frost
9. Allons-y (2)
10. Anisina
11. On an Island
12. Surfacing
13. This Heaven
14. The Blue
15. Faces of Stone
16. Let's Get Metaphysical
17. Today
18. Sorrow

Running Time: 89 minutes, 47 seconds (cutting it close!)

And here's a neat little time calculator that should make things easier for people that don't have all of the songs or use iTunes.

I'm not sure that's what's going on. I think the songs have guitar solos because David is a guitarist whose solos are magnificent! I don't think he uses them to pad out songs, they're part and parcel of David's music. It's like saying bands like Yes and Genesis pad out songs with keyboard solos - without them, it wouldn't be the same.

Going to nitpick here... A CD can only hold 80 minutes, not 90. So, er, make some more difficult decisions!

Are we focusing on music or lyrics? Does stuff he co-wrote with Polly count or not? Division Bell is the only one that has separate music/lyrics credits though so it's kind of a moot point anyway, but still.

There's a reason the "obligatory Gilmour solo" is a meme, you know. As much as I love "Sorrow", it doesn't need to be almost nine minutes long. I hold solos in prog tracks to a different standard than the usual rock guitar solo though, so that's just my nitpick.

Yeah I took the rules to mean PF songs credited to Gilmour only, both lyrics and music, so I believe "Coming Back to Life" is the only TDB song that is eligible.
