Rattle That Lock tour 2015-16

Post by Dyolf » Thu Oct 30, 2014 3:07 pm

I think I did this over at PFO but we may as well do it here too.

So, given that 2015 will see a new David Gilmour solo album, let's speculate on what he will and won't play.

To start with, here's a list of songs I don't think David will play without Rick, either because they won't sound right without him or because David just couldn't do it now that Rick is gone. Obviously the list isn't exhaustive but includes tracks which are either Floyd favourites or ones performed in 2006.
  • Echoes
  • Breathe
  • Time
  • Astronomy Domine
  • Arnold Layne
  • A "complete" performance of SOYCD 1-5
  • Wots... Uh the Deal?
Having said that this would be what I want/think he may do. A slash ( / ) denotes alternating songs:

Set 1

1. Castellorizon
2. On an Island
3. This Heaven
4. Whole of the new 2015 solo album

Set 2

1. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (the same as the 2006 tour)
2. Remember a Day
3. Dominoes / Terrapin
4. Fat Old Sun
5. Coming Back to Life / On the Turning Away
6. Sorrow
7. Money
8. Welcome to the Machine
9. Take a Breath
10. Dogs

Encore

1. Wish You Were Here
2. Louder Than Words
3. Comfortably Numb (with Jon Carin doing Roger-style vocals)

Okay, I think "Dogs" is a long shot, because it's from Animals and it contains the line "Just another sad old man, all alone and dying of cancer" - which may be too soon after Rick and Syd both dying of cancer. But it's a great song with great guitar work and it'd be amazing to see him play it, and let's face it, he surprised us in 2006 with "Echoes" and "Arnold Layne".

I like your list and think it's pretty spot on to what we might see. I too would love to see him pull Dogs out of the vaults, but I think its length, rather than one line in particular, might be what would dissuade him from doing it.

It's not as long as "Echoes" and he did that at every show.

I think some sort of Animals medley would be cool, like snippets of the "Sheep" intro, the talk box solo from "Pigs", the quiet section (with barking) and the following solo from "Dogs", and the outro from "Sheep" could make a good medley with the proper edits and whatnot.

Yeah, I think a medley would be great. Especially considering the material from that album hasn't been done live since the tour in 1977.

I'm pretty sure Roger has played at least one track from Animals on every one of his solo tours except The Wall tour of course.

In any case, it seems like Animals is starting to become something of a dark horse in the Pink Floyd canon, just because tracks from it are very rarely performed live, especially since the 1977 tour.

I was really referring more to Pink Floyd, as they didn't do anything from Animals in 1987-1989 or 1994. David and Nick are Pink Floyd now, so should David choose to work with Nick at all on this tour, it would still be covered.

They did rehearse "Sheep" for the 1994 tour but, for whatever reason, it never made it to a show. It was also in the proposed set list for their aborted 1996 tour, apparently.

From what I remember David couldn't sing the song with enough "angst" to do it justice.

David's voice does work better for the melodic, technical songs than for the loud/angry ones. I think that's why David's and Roger's voices were so complementary.

On that note, I'm really hoping that David will continue to play Wots... Uh The Deal?. That's a good example of a song that was made for David's voice.

For the most part, and I want to say about 99% of the time, the songs Pink Floyd did on the road after Roger left the band were all songs that David originally sang. There were very few that I can think of aside from SOYCD where Roger had originally done the lead vocals. So if they had done Sheep, it would have sounded incredibly odd. David's voice never lent itself to those kinds of vocals, as they were best done by Roger. The same as Roger couldn't have done Breathe or Time or Money or Fat Old Sun the way David sang them.

I've always preferred SOYCD with David singing it anyway, and I've always thought he should have done it on the record. They could have played it with Jon Carin singing it, he sang Roger's part on "Hey You".

I've always found it odd that David did play SoYCD during post-Waters tours, but I guess that song is just so immensely guitar-driven and iconic, so he almost had to play it. He has trouble hitting the high notes though, and I personally think that his calm, harmonic voice doesn't do the song justice. Roger had just the right sentiment for it.

Same here. Going back and listening to the album version with Roger's vocals, it just sounds off to me. I vastly prefer David's vocals on that track.

I like the Gdansk version where it goes really quiet and acoustic for the verses where it's just David and his guitar.

Reminds me of this version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qjpOLj7WSY
I think that's my favorite David Gilmour video out there. Out of these 167,000 views it has, about 100,000 are probably mine.

There's actually some softly-played piano too.

The best part of that entire performance, aside from all of it, is when the audience finally figures out what he's playing. I always love that moment when an artist or a group starts a track with a new or different intro, kind of stringing everyone along, until they kick into the intro they already know.

Yeah... It's sad that the youtube video has the title all over it. I missed out on that awesome moment. :(

I just gave it a listen...fantastic cover version. You know if Roger had been on that stage, those hollering fools would have gotten a face full of spit!

I keep finding it mindblowing that Roger wrote the line "(...) who was told not to spit in the fan," for Dogs. That was practically a prophecy.
