The Final Cut vs. A Momentary Lapse of Reason

From a Roger Waters fan's point of view, I can say the same thing: his best albums are the ones where he tries least to sound like Pink Floyd.

Amused To Death is still a really good album, but you can tell he tried to go for that great spaced out sound with lots of guitar solos. He thought he could do that without Gilmour and Wright, but it didn't quite work.

So the track "The Final Cut" came up on my Spotify at random today, and for the first time in the seven years I've been familiar with Pink Floyd, I actually rather enjoyed it. I think as my musical tastes have become more diversified and I've become a more empathetic person in general, the song was able to resonate in my mind in a way it never was able to before. Maybe I should give the entire album a second chance with my more mature outlook on life?

The Final Cut is such a divisive album, I honestly don't think its fans will be converted by a remix. Unless there's someone who hates both but would pick TFC solely because of the production.

I like AMLOR a lot, and I don't care for the production, but the problems with that album are rooted in the songwriting. A remix is not going to change the fact that The Dogs Of War has clumsy lyrics, or that Yet Another Movie is plodding and repetitive. But I don't seriously dislike either of those songs, and I am interested to hear them in a new sonic context.

That said, I am definitely in agreement that the box set is way overpriced, and after how brutally the last one disappointed me (when every single song I was excited to hear just flat sucked!), I definitely have no intention to buy this even for 20% of its value. But, with the miracle of YouTube, I'll be able to listen to it.

I just hope the remix isn't as bad as OBC was - cranking up the sibilants to the threshold of pain does not constitute a remix!

Well, a better production for AMLOR would go a long way. Already One Slip sounds like a brand new song, and its easily the weakest one of the entire album, so maybe the rest of that album is greater now?

In their original forms, I'd dare say that The Final Cut is the better album, after all these years. I've really given the album a second chance, and it's grown on me a lot in recent weeks. I was hoping that the 2019 remix of Lapse would change my opinion on that album, and it sort of has, but now the original 1987 mix sounds even weaker, and I can't even listen to it when there's a better version out now. The 2019 remix is better than The Final Cut for me because it is now a proper Pink Floyd record, but the songs themselves are still a bit weak, even with a better coat of paint on them.
